Diaspora Prom is a celebration of unity within Black iden-
tity, blending the rich aesthetics of Nigerian Yoruba aso ebi
wedding fashion with the expressive glamour of African
American prom culture. These two traditions—bold, intri-
cate, and deeply rooted in community—are often viewed
separately, but this collection highlights their shared spirit
and power.

Through draping, embellishment, and layered textiles,
each look explores the tension and beauty between differ-
ence and similarity. Velvet, a staple of 90s Black American
fashion, is paired with Ankara fabrics to reflect both lin-
eage and legacy. Silhouettes are carefully constructed to
honor both cultural influences, while reimagining them
through a modern lens.

Inspired by the artistry of Zelda Wynn Valdes and guided
by my own experiences, this collection reflects the intersec-
tions of culture, history, and self. Diaspora Prom is about
reclaiming connection, celebrating craftsmanship, and
creating space where all parts of our identities can exist—
together.
